The Reid Gallery inaugural exhibition

The Reid Gallery opens with specially created furniture, film and sculpture

Mackintosh-inspired vase and fresh flowers, South Korean soap stars and a sculpture made from piano wood feature in inaugural exhibition.

The Reid Gallery, a purpose built exhibition space on the ground floor of the new Reid Building, opened on 22 March 2014. For the inaugural show GSA Exhibitions Director Jenny Brownrigg invited four of the School’s alumni – Briggs & Cole, Raydale Dower and Heaven Baek - to respond to the architecture of the space and this point in the GSA’s 170 year history. The exhibition features a Mackintosh-inspired vase and fresh flowers, South Korean soap stars and a sculpture made from piano wood. It runs until 4 May 2014 and is part of the included programme for the 2014 Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art.

“Steven Holl Architects’ buildings have often been inspired by the connection between architecture, music and poetry,”says Brownrigg. “A ‘caesura’ denotes a brief, silent pause in poetry or music, during which metrical time is not counted. As the new Reid Building welcomes people and springs into life, occupied by its community, visited by the public, this inaugural exhibition is intended to act as a pause in time, the beginning of a new chapter for the art school.”

Private View: 6-8pm, Thursday 3 April

This Song Belongs to Those who Sing It, aspecial new commission for the 2014 Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art (GI), sees GSA alumnus Michael Stumpf making an installation of new exterior and interior works at The Glasgow School of Art.
Michael Stumpf, Massive Angry Sculpture (2011)

Artist Michael Stumpf's sculptural practice uses a wide range of materials and processes to explore the nature of making and the existential experience of things. Questions of time, gravity and attitude are raised to examine object as language, and language as object. His work manifests itself in poetic sculptural propositions set in relation to one another to create carefully structured installations. For this new commission Stumpf has made an ambitious new body of work that considers the context of the art school as an 'expanded field'.  Creating a sequence of points where the audience encounter it, the exhibition begins on Renfrew Street on the facade of the Reid and Mackintosh Buildings, and culminates in the Mackintosh Museum.

Glasgow 2014 Press Release

Coveted medal every athlete wants unveiled to mark 100 Days to Go to Glasgow 2014

They are the Gold, Silver and Bronze prizes that are the focus of training and commitment for 4,500 athletes across the Commonwealth and to mark 100 Days to Go to the Opening Ceremony, the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Medals were revealed to the public for the first time.

The medals were unveiled tonight (Monday 14 April) in spectacular style at Glasgow’s iconic Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum which provided a stunning backdrop to the reveal.

The unique awards are silver gilt (for the gold) silver and bronze – the traditional make-up of medals at Commonwealth and Olympic events, and weigh in at 100g each.

They have been designed by internationally renowned jeweller and maker Jonathan Boyd who worked with a team of eleven specialist jeweller-makers at the prestigious Glasgow School of Art (GSA) to hand make the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals through a series of complex and skilled processes meaning each one is truly unique.

They were revealed at a special event which also recreated the medal procession ceremony showing the ceremonial outfits to be worn by the male and female medal bearers, the trays the medals will be placed in and specially created gifts which will be given to the winning athletes.

The creative team behind the medal ceremonies also includes Paul Hodgkiss, designer of the wooden podiums, trays and gifts and fashion designer Kerry Nixon, who designed the dresses worn by the female medal bearers and styled the male medal bearers with the support of Harris Tweed who made the specially-commissioned fabric.

The design team has drawn inspiration from many elements of Scotland including the Isle of Harris itself to the parks of Glasgow. Incorporating the unique and iconic Harris Tweed fabric into the Medal Ceremony demonstrated the age-old tradition and artisan skills of the weavers in a modern and contemporary setting.

The event gave a glimpse of the moments of a lifetime for winning athletes which will be broadcast around the globe and highlighted the talents of three designers who have come together to create a beautiful and unique Glasgow 2014 Medal Ceremony which will be seen by a global audience of 1.5 billion.

GSA has been involved with developing both the medals and the dress fabrics with the school’s Centre for Advanced Textiles printing the distinctive Glasgow 2014 Official Tartan material onto the silk fabric.

Former Commonwealth Gold Medallist and TV presenter Iwan Thomas hosted the event which also featured Scotland’s most decorated athlete, Allan Wells, MBE and aspiring future athletics star Joseph Amouzou, 18, who attends The Glasgow School of Sport. Joseph is the reigning Under 20 Indoor Triple Jump champion and hopes to compete in future Commonwealth Games.

The event was also attended by Glasgow 2014 Games Partners and representatives of business and civic Scotland.

Chairman of Glasgow 2014, Lord Smith of Kelvin, KT, who spoke at the ceremony said:

“These medals are the coveted prize that all the athletes coming to compete at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games have in their sights – the ultimate reward for all those years of toil, training and dedication.  Our medals are unlike any I have seen before and are a unique representation of the stunning, contemporary vision of Scotland that will be beamed around the world.  With just 100 days to go until the Opening Ceremony, the stage is now well and truly set for an outstanding XX Commonwealth Games.”

Michael Cavanagh, Chairman of Commonwealth Games Scotland, said:

To win a Commonwealth Games medal is one of the highlights of any athlete’s career, but to win a medal on home soil would be something else and mean so much more. Since Scotland was awarded the Games in 2007, athletes across the country have aspired to be a part of Team Scotland at Glasgow 2014 and I am sure we will see some truly awe inspiring performances, as they aim to realise their dreams in just over 100 days and make Scotland very proud.”

Shona Robison, Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport, said:

""It is fantastic to see the medals for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games revealed.  They look absolutely stunning and I'm sure that all the athletes, who have worked so hard to get here and compete, will be honoured to receive one of these medals.  The Games are proving a great showcase for Scottish designers from these fantastic medals designed by Jonathan Boyd, to the wooden quaichs by Paul Hodgkiss and the dresses for the female medal bearers by Kerry Nixon.

"We are celebrating 100 days to go today before we are host to the largest sporting and cultural event ever seen in Scotland.  The final pieces are all coming together as we get ready to deliver the best Games ever and to showcase Scotland on a global stage. "

Councilor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said:

“100 Days to Go is the last lap on our preparations for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, the biggest event in the city’s history.  It is very fitting that we celebrate this landmark by unveiling these fantastic medals, which will reflect modern Glasgow when we host the Games this summer, and I would like to offer my congratulations to the designer, Jonathan Boyd.”

Jonathan Boyd said:

"It’s a real honour to have been invited to design the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games medals. As someone who is extremely proud to live in the city of Glasgow and an avid sports fan, I am thrilled to be given this opportunity. I hope I have designed something that stands proud as an interesting and unique object but, more importantly, something that celebrates each athlete's individual achievement."

“Each of the medals was handmade in Glasgow by a group of internationally recognised jewellers. This could only have been achieved at The Glasgow School of Art. It has been a wonderful commission both for me and my colleagues in the Silversmithing and Jewellery department.

Kerry Nixon said:

"I’m delighted to be a part of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.  It’s a huge honour for me to design and now showcase the Medal Bearer’s dress and represent my hometown of Glasgow at such an exciting time for the City.”

Paul Hodgkiss said:

"It is a real honour being asked to design and create the athletes gifts, medal trays and podiums.

I am so very proud that the winning athletes will experience an atmosphere we have helped to create in my home city and that they will take home with them not only good memories but, literally, a little piece of Glasgow.”

A further three Glasgow School of Art graduates have been shortlisted for the Turner prize it was revealed today, 7 May 2014, as the nominations for the 2014 prize were announced. This means that 30% of Turner Prize nominees since 2005 have been GSA graduates with four winners since 1996 graduating from the institution.

Tris Vonn Michell (BA in Fine Art Photography, 2005), Ciara Phillips (MFA, 2004) and Duncan Campbell (MFA, 1998) have all been nominated for the 30th Turner prize.

“We are delighted that three of our graduates have made the shortlist for the 30th annual Turner Prize,” says Professor Tom Inns, Director of The Glasgow School of Art. “That three of the four nominated artists have developed their practice in Glasgow underlines once again the position of the city as one of Europe’s leading centres for the visual arts.”

Tris Vonna-Michell, is noted for his semi-improvised presentations, often using slide projections, for a pre-arranged period, with an egg-timer to let him know when he has reached his limit.  He has been nominated for a solo show in Brussels.

Screen-printer Ciara Phillips often transforms her exhibition spaces into workshops and sometimes works with community groups, which have included Justice for Domestic Workers, creating banners and posters. She is nominated for a show in London in which she was inspired by a pioneering artist called Corita Kent.

Film-maker Duncan Campbell has been nominated for his presentation at the Scottish Pavilion of the 2013 Venice Biennale in which he screened Chris Marker and Alain Resnais's 1953 film Statues Also Die alongside his response – a film which featured choreography by Michael Clark and explored the commercialisation of African art.

The 2014 Turner Prize nominees will all show work in an exhibition opening in London at the end of September. Students on the first year of the GSA MFA are currently showing work in the Reid Gallery of the GSA.

2014 GSA Degree Show, an opportunity to see work by a new generation creative talent, will be staged in the Mackintosh, Reid and Bourdon buildings from 14 – 21 June 2014. Meanwhile, the 2014 MFA Degree Show will be at the Glue Factory from 12 – 21 June 2014.

Andy Speedie and Alan Howie of Keills presenting the award to Lili in the Mackintosh Library.

Third year Painting and Printmaking student Lili Eichinger has won a cartoon competition run by Glasgow-based property fund manager Keills. Lili was awarded £200 for her response to the brief - a drawing or painting in a cartoon or caricature style depicting a current economic issue, to be used in a forthcoming advert in the quarterly publication napfnews (National Association of Pension Funds) and also on the Keills website.

Lili commented: 'It was a great feeling to win this competition. I liked the idea of the brief, that Keills would like to have something satirical, because in my art practice I am keen to use satirical or sarcastic images/texts. So it was a perfect opportunity to apply for. I also entered the competition because I am interested in economic questions and problems (especially as these affect all markets and therefore have an impact on the art market). I think it's a good challenge to bring art and economic problems "together", and to explore what kind of conversation is possible between them. I was very grateful to get Andy’s review and feedback. It's made me feel that I definitely don't want to miss out on any competitions like this in the future.'

Libby Anson, Student Employability and Enterprise Manager at the GSA, said: 'The beauty of the opportunity that Keills presented to our students here at The Glasgow School of Art was that it was a very simple, straightforward brief. It offered a challenge combining freedom of artistic approach with a concise and clear outcome. This meant that any student from across the School, irrespective of programme of study, who had a flair for drawing and a sense of wit, could have a go and produce something prize-worthy relatively quickly.'

Andy Speedie from Keills said: 'This has been an enjoyable, educational and rewarding experience and we will certainly repeat the competition next year.'

A MULTI AGENCY PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY SFRS.

Firefighters battling the blaze at the iconic Macintosh Building in Glasgow City Centre have prevented the destruction of both the structure and the majority of its contents.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service crews are continuing work to fully extinguish the fire and save artworks.

With the incident under control indications are the firefighters' efforts have ensured more than 90 per cent of the structure is viable and protected up to 70 per cent of the contents - including many students' work.

Assistant Chief Officer Dave Boyle, director of service delivery on the west, said: "Crews have been working absolutely flat out throughout this very challenging incident and it is clear their effort and skill has saved this treasured building and many of the items it housed.

"While the priority from the outset was to save life we have also been working closely with Glasgow School of Art staff to ensure firefighters conducted an effective salvage operation.

"We are of course very conscious the Macintosh is a world renowned building that is a key feature of this great city, and that the artworks it stores are not only valuable but also cherished.

"We are acutely aware this period is the culmination of years of endeavour for students and that their irreplaceable work is inside the Macintosh.

"Work to save everything that can be saved is ongoing and we will continue to work closely with GSA staff and students throughout this operation."

A spokesperson for Glasgow School of Art added: "We would like to express our very sincere thanks to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service for their tremendous efforts throughout today."
