Gemma is the recipient of the 2015 Newbery Medal

Product Design graduate, Gemma Lord, is the recipient of the 2015 Newbery Medal, the highest accolade awarded by The Glasgow School of Art, it was announced today 19 June 2015. The Newbery Medal, named after Francis (Fra) Newbery, who commissioned Mackintosh to design the now world-famous art school building, is awarded each year to the highest performing student across the Schools of Architecture, Design and Fine Art.

Gemma Lord’s Degree Show project, Artic Alba, explores the idea of ‘North’ and being ‘Northern’, locating the exploration within the context of changing relationships with the Arctic. At a time when an entire population is seeking post-referendum reconciliation, the political reverberations of which are still being experienced, she uses design to probe the real, perceived and imagined conditions of being a ‘Northern’ nation, investigating the relationships that Scottish people have with the North.  Through the idea of Arctic Alba, and proliferating the narratives within it, it becomes possible to imagine how Scotland might transform in an Arctic future and how evolving relationships with the North might manifest themselves in everyday life.

Chairman’s Medals were presented to Ronan Morris and Aoibhin Sarah McGinley, (Stage 5 Architecture); Alan Knox, (Communication Design); and Rosanna Lee (Sculpture and Environmental Art).

42 graduating students also won awards across a variety of specialisms (full list below).
