Former Director of the Scottish Arts Council, Graham Berry, has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate at GSA Singapore graduation. This is the first honorary doctorate awarded at the GSA Singapore.
Berry, who now lives in Singapore, made a major contribution to the cultural sector of the nation in over 30 years working in Scotland. At the Scottish Film Council, where he worked from 1974 – 1986, he was instrumental in establishing the Glasgow Film Theatre, Edinburgh Film House, Scottish Film Production Fund and the Scottish Film Archive.
Meanwhile, during his time at the Scottish Arts Council (1989 – 2007) he made significant changes to support Scotland’s cultural and creative sector in a post-devolution Scotland including introducing regular long-term funding for a range of organisations. Under his leadership the National Theatre of Scotland and Sistema Scotland (The Big Noise) were both established and a dedicated Scottish presence at the Venice Art Biennale was introduced.
Now based in Singapore Berry continues to support cultural and creative institutions including The Glasgow School of Art Singapore, Singapore Arts Festival, Sub Station and the Photographic Society of Singapore.
“Graham Berry’s impact on Scotland’s creative and cultural eco-system cannot be under-estimated, but it is something for which he remains incredibly modest” says Professor Tom Inns, Director of The Glasgow School of Art. “Now in Singapore, in his distinctly quiet way, Graham is contributing with just as much vigour and insight, helping to shape Singapore’s creative and cultural future.”
