Textile Design graduate, Erin McQuarrie, was awarded the Newbery Medal today, 15 June 2018. The prestigious award, named after celebrated GSA Director Francis “Fra” Newbery, is bestowed annually on the top student graduating from an undergraduate programme. For her Degree Show 25-year old McQuarrie from Glasgow created a collection of textiles which was inspired by the Mackintosh Building after the fire.
At the same ceremony an Honorary Doctorate was awarded to one of the world’s leading experts on European design at the time of Mackintosh, Juliet Kinchin. A former Glasgow School of Art tutor, Kinchin is now Curator of Design at the world famous Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York. Earlier in the day three of the most influential artists and art educators of their generation, Sam Ainsley, David Harding and Alexander Moffat were also awardedHonorary Doctorates.
“In the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mackintosh his masterpiece continues to inspire our students,” says Professor Tom Inns, Director of The Glasgow School of Art. “Erin’s innovative Degree Show collection, which has taken the Mackintosh Building after the fire as its staring point, has pushed the boundaries of textile techniques and forms.”
“Erin’s work is a must see,” adds Head of Fashion and Textiles, Jimmy Stephen-Cran.“She painstakingly documented the restoration process of the Mackintosh Building and interpreted it beautifully as fabric.”
“The colours, textures and aura of the scorched interior have been captured using traditional craft skills and technological approaches. Everyone is looking forward to what she does next”
Talking of her designs Erin said: “I worked from imagery of the building’s interior after the fire which I gathered during site visits, and I have also been inspired by a selection of Japanese Ukiyo-e Woodblock prints which informed Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s design.”
