A further three Glasgow School of Art graduates have been shortlisted for the Turner prize it was revealed today, 7 May 2014, as the nominations for the 2014 prize were announced. This means that 30% of Turner Prize nominees since 2005 have been GSA graduates with four winners since 1996 graduating from the institution.
Tris Vonn Michell (BA in Fine Art Photography, 2005), Ciara Phillips (MFA, 2004) and Duncan Campbell (MFA, 1998) have all been nominated for the 30th Turner prize.
“We are delighted that three of our graduates have made the shortlist for the 30th annual Turner Prize,” says Professor Tom Inns, Director of The Glasgow School of Art. “That three of the four nominated artists have developed their practice in Glasgow underlines once again the position of the city as one of Europe’s leading centres for the visual arts.”
Tris Vonna-Michell, is noted for his semi-improvised presentations, often using slide projections, for a pre-arranged period, with an egg-timer to let him know when he has reached his limit. He has been nominated for a solo show in Brussels.
Screen-printer Ciara Phillips often transforms her exhibition spaces into workshops and sometimes works with community groups, which have included Justice for Domestic Workers, creating banners and posters. She is nominated for a show in London in which she was inspired by a pioneering artist called Corita Kent.
Film-maker Duncan Campbell has been nominated for his presentation at the Scottish Pavilion of the 2013 Venice Biennale in which he screened Chris Marker and Alain Resnais's 1953 film Statues Also Die alongside his response – a film which featured choreography by Michael Clark and explored the commercialisation of African art.
The 2014 Turner Prize nominees will all show work in an exhibition opening in London at the end of September. Students on the first year of the GSA MFA are currently showing work in the Reid Gallery of the GSA.
2014 GSA Degree Show, an opportunity to see work by a new generation creative talent, will be staged in the Mackintosh, Reid and Bourdon buildings from 14 – 21 June 2014. Meanwhile, the 2014 MFA Degree Show will be at the Glue Factory from 12 – 21 June 2014.
